Mangaluru: Many students from Mangalore University (MU) who faced issues with the refund of excess examination fees deducted through the UUCMS payment system last semester, have finally got some relief.
The UUCMS provided a comprehensive list of nearly 3,000 students who encountered glitches in their exam fee payments. These students had amounts deducted digitally multiple times, without receiving refunds. MU will now initiate cross-verification of each payment in collaboration with the university's officials from the finance department. The university will refund the amount to the candidates after cross-verification. Some candidates had their money deducted multiple times, while others claimed that it had been deducted twice.
After the list of students affected by the glitch was released, a verification process was undertaken, and nearly 40% of them received refunds within a few hours or days. However, many students are still awaiting their refund. The UUCMS has informed that the deducted amounts were credited to Mangalore University's account. Now, the university must trace each transaction, verify the payments, and initiate the refund, said H Devendrappa, registrar (oevaluation), MU.
Due to the delay in the refund process, candidates have demanded that the excess amount be adjusted against the upcoming exam fee payment. However, Devendrappa clarified that this is not possible, as hall tickets are generated only after candidates pay the fee online through the UUCMS portal. The last date to pay the exam fee for the upcoming semester is in the first week of May.
Meanwhile, college representatives continue to receive requests from students seeking an early refund of the excess amount. Devendrappa acknowledged that the amount involved is significant, making it difficult for many students to arrange fees for the upcoming semester exams. He assured that efforts are being made to expedite the refund process.
Jayakar Bhandary, principal of Dr P Dayananda Pai-P Satisha Government First Grade College, Carstreet, Mangaluru, said that around 60 students from his college are still awaiting refunds. "It would be convenient if the refund process is completed at the earliest, as students constantly approach us for updates. Unfortunately, we do not have an answer for them," he said.
